描述
The Houma Covenant Book is a covenant written by the State of Jin during the late Spring and Autumn Period in China. It was discovered in the southeastern suburbs of Houma City, Shanxi Province in 1965-1966, hence the name. The Houma Covenant Book was written in red on stone or jade tablets and buried in a pit together with sacrifices such as sheep and cattle. A total of 656 copies have been unearthed so far. There are many different opinions on the date of the covenant and its historical background. Some say that the main covenantors were Duke Ding of Jin, Zhao Jianzi, and Zhao Huanzi. The documents can be divided into five categories according to their content: clan covenant, pledge, room acceptance, curse, and divination. The oath swore loyalty to the main covenantor and prayed to the gods. If anyone violated the contract, his clan would be punished. The purpose of the covenant was to confirm the loyalty of the servants to the master and to consolidate the relationship within the aristocratic clan or between clans. The Houma Covenant Book was written in seal script. Its discovery has given people a more comprehensive and correct understanding of the method of covenant in the Spring and Autumn Period.
