描述
In the past, there were patterns of longevity, dragon and phoenix, cranes, the sea, the sun, and pine trees on clothing. The brick carvings of houses and the wooden carvings on the door skirts are mostly auspicious patterns. There are many auspicious patterns on ancient furniture, doors and windows, porcelain, and jade. These auspicious patterns are mostly derived from the homophonic sounds of Chinese characters, such as bats and “fu”, horses, bees and monkeys forming “immediately enfeoffed marquises”, and the patterns composed of bats and longevity characters symbolize “both happiness and longevity”, with the meaning of happiness and longevity. Five bats surround a longevity character, symbolizing “five blessings holding longevity”. The five blessings are: longevity, wealth, health, morality, and a good ending. Some auspicious patterns also come from folk legends, such as the Eight Immortals wishing birthday and Magu offering good luck. This atmosphere of pursuing auspicious patterns was most prosperous during the Ming and Qing dynasties, among which the Qianlong period was the most prevalent.
